Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy and counselling are both types of mental health therapy that often overlap during treatment, while there are distinct technical differences. Counselling generally aims to help people resolve current, discrete issues, while psychotherapy can focus more on long-term issues that may be historic or developmental in nature. Counselling is aimed at a specific difficulty, current problem or a newly developed issue. Psychotherapy is more likely to help with more deeply rooted difficulties that affect a client’s life. It is important to note that what may at first appear to be a current or discrete problem to be resolved in isolation may in fact be connected to historic and underlying patterns of behaviour or trauma. Ultimately, therapy can often blend elements of both, and the distinction is much less important than the decision to begin the healing journey.

What can I expect during a therapy session?

We first and foremost aim to create a safe and comfortable space for you to explore yourself in. We are focused on bringing compassion, care and understanding to every session and to work with you at your own pace. Supportive challenge can also be an important part of the therapeutic process and is introduced in line with your stage of readiness and development. During our sessions we will explore what is happening or has been happening in your life that brought you into therapy. We will work with you to bring you closer to your more whole and authentic self and to some of those maybe out of reach or unrecognised internal resources. And most importantly, to develop strategies for achieving your goals.

How long is an individual therapy session?

Standard sessions are 60 minutes.

How long does treatment take?

This is something that becomes clearer to each individual over time. It may be that you wish to set yourself a timeframe for your treatment and then work within that. Alternatively, you may keep this open ended until a sense of readiness is arrived upon.

What is mental health?

'Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their community ... Mental health exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next. At any one time, a diverse set of individual, family, community and structural factors may combine to protect or undermine mental health.' (...read more @ World Health Organisation)
